PAPA JOE WAS HERE!

Ree's Dad came out to Utah from Florida for two weeks beginning June 1st. One of the first things that he did was to go on a drive out to Antelope Island in the Great Salt Lake. He went with us,Ian and my parents, Bill and Varda. None of us had ever been out to Antelope Island previously. It was a cold day (hard to imagine now). We drove out on the causeway to the visitor center on the northern tip of the island. The island is more of a peninsula now with the low water levels of the Great Salt Lake. There are pronghorn antelope (island gets its name), bison (intoduced in 1893), rabbits, coyotes, etc on the island. The bison herd numbers around 600 and we saw a few that day.

The best animal story of the day occurred when we saw an adult coyote run across the road in front of us followed immediately by a juvenile coyote who was followed immediately by a jackrabbit. It appeared as though the rabbit was chasing the coyotes and as we imagined it...... taunting them and threatening them.

I also took Papa Joe on two fishing trips to Deer Creek Reservoir. One trip we spent the night, then Richard Locker and the grandkids (Ian, Azure and Anakhan) met us the next day. We had a great time, and we caught 25 fish, including smallmouth bass, rainbow trout and brown trout. The other trip was a day trip back to Deer Creek and Ian came along. Rainbow trout were the order of the day on that trip.

MY TRIP TO GUAM

written by Robert W. Barrett:
The adventure began as a result of a consulting assignment I obtained for the Bank of Guam. When I left for Guam on May 1st it was snowing. When I arrived on Guam it was 90 degrees and 95% humidity. The arrangements were for a three week trip to the island of Guam out in the Pacific over by the Philippine islands. Guam is a US territory. The United States "obtained" as a result of the Spanish American War. Spain had claimed Guam as a result of its discovery by Magellean back in the 1500's. Japan conquered Guam at the start of WWII and the US took it back in July/August 1944. One Japanese soldier remained hidden on Guam for 27 years finally surrendering in 1972. He got married after going back to Japan and then took his honeymoon back on Guam of all places!

The flight out to Guam is a grind. I flew to Hawaii and then from Hawaii to Guam. The flights last about 17 hours and you "lose" a day crossing the international date line. Guam is about 30 miles long by 15 miles wide. It is tropical, hot and steamy.

Our father (William G) visited the island back in October 1944 not long after it was retaken. He was there on the escort carrier, USS Altamaha. He remembers getting a beer ration of three beers which he gave away (he says) and of swimming in the ocean there and almost being swept out to sea by the currents and being in the sharp coral on the reef.... he is a thrill seeker. Soon after this visit to Guam his ship was caught in a Super Typhoon in the Philippine Sea and sustained considerable damage. Thrill seeker Bill wanted me to swim in the ocean at Guam so I did take a benign swim at the hotel's beach (Marriott). I saw bonefish swimming by and all was relaxing and comforting until I was attacked and nipped a few times on my legs by a pesky 12 inch fish with an attitude. That ended the swim and my version of thrill seeking for me.

During my three weeks on Guam I was threatened by a Super Typhoon and experienced an earthquake. The Typhoon just missed the island with the outer rain bands coming onshore. The earthquake didn't miss. I was 18 floors up on a Saturday morning and the 6.7 quake came rolling through making the hotel building sway back and forth. That was unnerving and I realize how terrifying it would be to have everything falling down around and on top of you. Guam has strict building codes to deal with the typhoons and earthquakes so we did not sustain any damage. Just a few days later the China quake occurred and the result was not near as good due to their building codes and the more intense strength of their quake.

Guam is a pretty place and it would be nice to take a vacation there and not work but...... it is so far away that I don't think I'll be vacationing there anytime soon. When I complained to Dad about how long it takes to get there, he essentially said "Oh quit your crying it took me six weeks to get there on a ship."

I MISS YOU, BOBBY!

Posted by Picasa

Robert left to go to Guam on Thursday, May 1st, 2008. He's only been gone for a few days and I miss him already! The morning he left Salt Lake, it was snowing. Then, he had to fly to Houston and spend the night. From Houston, he had a 7 1/2 hour flight to Honolulu, Hawaii. In Hawaii, he had a 1 1/2 hour layover, then another 7 1/2 hour flight to the tropical island of Guam.
He is a banking consultant, and one his client's is the Bank of Guam. He'll be gone for 3 weeks, and promises to bring back pictures.

TATUM SLOAN EVANS - April 23, 2003

written by Monica Barrett Evans

When Tatum was born on April 23, 2003, the nurse took her to clean her up and said, “wow, she is so mad. I’ve never seen such a mad baby…she didn’t like that.” It wasn’t that pleasant for me either, but I knew then that Tatum would be a little firecracker.

Tatum has always been the silliest kid I have ever known. When Ariel and Ian were babies, we all used to say they were so crazy….which they were, but Tatum takes the cake. She has always been so happy and silly. She says the most off the wall things, or will just start breaking out dancing. She calls her grampa “Bobby.”

I believe Tatum holds the record for most apple juice drank in her short 5 years. About three years ago we started adding about ½ water to her juice (to save her teeth and money). She loves “apple” which she says is a girl. I don’t know how many times she will wake up from a nap and say “Mom…..I want some apple.” Actually lately she will just say, “Apple.” I get the point. She is so tall and skinny I tell her I need to go on the apple juice diet.

Tatum has always been in love with her blanket, which she calls “Bank” or sometimes “Manky.” This blanket actually started out as Ariel’s when she was a baby, and Tatum inherited it. Excuse me, inherited ‘him.’ Bank is a boy. He started out as a bright yellow and orange blanket with tied strings all over. Because of Tatum, he is now a barely yellow, worn out thing with a transplanted back from another blanket sewed on. Tatum still loves Bank and sucks on his strings anytime she is relaxing or sleeping. There are only certain strings she will suck on. She will say “mmm, these strings are so good.” She is so used to doing it, she will be falling asleep with her eyes closed and her little hands will feel around until she finds the right string.

When Tatum was three, we went miniature golfing. Like any three year old, she was walking around exploring the place when she suddenly tripped and fell face first into a rock the size of her. I picked her up and saw her lip was split open and bleeding. We rushed to urgent care and she had to get 3 stitches in her lip. She had also hit her poor baby tooth and eventually had to have that one pulled. So she is a cute girl with one front tooth missing.

About a month ago, the whole family got the flu. It was so bad I think Tatum slept for two straight days. Even now, she will tell me “I don’t have the flu anymore huh?” I think it scared her a little.

Tatum is a good dancer and loves to sing. She loves to write letters and numbers and play with the dogs (one of which is a lot bigger than she is). She also loves baby dolls and barbies.

She has pretty blonde curly hair that always looks a little wild, but I think that is how she should look. She also likes to wear two different socks. I had a mom of one of her classmates tell me that her daughter put on different socks one day and said “it’s okay, Tatum does it all the time.”

Tatum is in preschool right now at Blue Kangaroo in the Curious Critters classroom. She is so funny all the kids love her. This one little boy named Riley comes up to see her as soon as she gets there everyday. He gave her a balloon for Valentine’s Day and loves to draw pictures for her.

Now that Tatum is 5 she will be starting kindergarten in July. She is excited that she will be going to the same school as her sister. She had her birthday party at Jump Man Jump. I think she ran about 100 miles an hour the whole time, going down slides and on obstacle courses. On our way home, she started to plan her next party. I wonder if Bank will be around for that one…

Hello, Reno!!! Hello, SNOW!?!??!!

On Sunday, I drove back to Reno with Monica and the girls to spend a few days with them. It was a fun drive back (especially because I wasn't driving)! We drove up into the mountains, and saw snow on the ground there. It was strange because we had just been at the beach the day before. BUT...what was stranger than that is that when we woke up on Tuesday morning, it was snowing like crazy! What weird weather we have in the west!
I stayed at Monica's house from Sunday until Thursday afternoon (August 16th). Her house is so-o-o-o beautiful and so big! (It's perfect for them and their dogs, Katy and Tahoe.) While I was there, Ariel stayed home on Monday, but Tatum stayed home Monday-Wednesday, and we stayed busy all the time. She has a 'Digital Art Studio' that hooks up to the computer, and we spent lots of time on that. We colored, played games, and I caught up on all of the kids TV shows I've missed so much! We filmed a movie with the girls in it. (Their names in the movie were Skip and Lucy! It was fun!) We celebrated Tatum's b-day early. We started off with yummy cake and then presents. After that we watched the movie, "Alvin and the Chipmunks." We're actually celebrating her birthday everyday while I'm here. Her 5th birthday is not until April 23rd, but since I'm gonna miss it, we're partying every day!!!

My April Vacation

I finally got a couple of weeks off work, so I could take a trip to see Bob in California. He has been working in San Mateo, CA for about 4 weeks. After working on Sunday, April 6, I took a taxi out to the airport to take my first JetBlue flight. Since I work soooo hard for JetBlue, I thought I might enjoy one of the perks...free flying! When I got to the airport, I thought I wouldn't make it on the flight because I was #7 (out of 7) on the stand-by list, but I made it. I got to sit in one of the jumpseats...not that comfy, but I got to the San Francisco Airport, where my little Bobby was waiting for me. He was staying at the Residence Inn, and we hung out together from Sunday nite until Friday afternoon, when Monica and the girls (Ariel and Tatum) came to spend the week-end with us. They had a long ride from Reno, but it was so great to see them again. (We hadn't visited with them since climbing Mt. Timpanogas last July!)
We had a great room at the hotel. I stayed there all week with Bob in a studio apartment. The hotel gave Bob a limo ride to and from work everyday, and when I needed to go shopping after I got there...they gave me a limo ride to Target!! Pretty cool, huh?
On Thursday evening, we moved to a larger room. It was a "penthouse" suite, so the girls had lots of room to run around in! Monica, Ariel and Tatum got there on Friday evening (April 12th).
Early on Saturday morning, we left to go to visit the Monterey Bay Aquarium... about a 2-hour drive. We picked the perfect day to go---it was the warmest day of the year so far in California. My favorite part of the aquarium was all of the jellyfish displays. Ariel and Tatum loved the sea otters, and getting to pet the stingrays. Monica's favorite was eating at "Louie Linguini's" We had so much fun, and when we got back to the hotel, all of the girls went swimming in the hotel pool.
We all got wet (even Bob)! I got wet by putting my feet in the hot tub, Monica got wet because she got in the pool and so did Ariel and Tatum. Tatum was scared at first but got used to it when Monica got in! We all had fun but the person who I think had the most fun was Ariel! She said, "The best part of the pool fun was when Bob pulled me in the life preserver with a rope. I went so fast I almost drowned. It was awesome! The sad thing was that they made me get out!" That child, what are we going to do with her!?!

ANGELA & RICHARD'S TEMPLE WEDDING

On Saturday, March 29, 2008, we were able to see our daughter, Angela and her husband, Richard Locker, have their marriage solemnized in the Jordan River Temple. The day started out with a little rain, and after the ceremony, it was sunny, but very cold and windy outside when we took a few pictures.
Angela was so beautiful (as usual). Richard was baptized in August 2006, and wanted to be married to Angela in the temple for time and all eternity. It was such a beautiful ceremony. Richard's Aunt Tami Combs came to be with him. Bob and I were the escorts for them. We were joined in the marriage sealing room by Angela's grandparents, Bill and Varda Barrett. Angela wanted to have a private ceremony, so we just had her aunts and uncles attending with us. Thank you, Joan for driving all the way from St. George to be with us. We also had Glenn and Stephanie, Brent and Ginger, Nancy and Bryan, and Julie and Jeff. Thank you all so much for being there to support us and to show your love for our family. We all appreciate it more than you'll ever know. It was such a special, sacred experience for us.
The ceremony was very special to begin with, but when Ian came into the room to be sealed to his parents, it just made it even more so. That smile on his face was so precious, and when he entered the room and kneeled with Angela and Richard at the altar, everyone in the room started crying (even the men--well, maybe?). We will remember this day forever, and we know that all of our family will be together forever!

ARIEL AND TATUM'S EASTER PICS

Here are our beautiful Reno grand-daughters, Ariel and Tatum.

How can you help but love these two cuties! I can't wait so see them in California. I can't wait until I get to spend some time with them soon. They're going to meet us in California and then, I'm gonna stay with them in Reno for a few days. We'll have more pics from my trip later.

Ariel's 10th Birthday!

Ariel, our oldest granddaughter, had her 10th birthday on January 22, 2008. Monica finally sent me some pictures of her birthday that we would like to share.

Ariel is the greatest kid! She is so beautiful, both inside and out. She has a great personality, and has so many friends. She's also very smart, and is always on the honor roll. We have enjoyed seeing her grow over the last 10 years. I was lucky enough to (help) take care of her for the first 3 years of her life. She was my little "Boo." She is so sweet and so self-less; she is always worrying about others more than herself. She has been such a help to Monica, and has been Tatum's second Mommy. She's been a great blessing to our family. Ariel, we love you so much! (Bob and Grandma Ree will see you soon in California!!)

P.S. Monica also had her birthday in February! Happy Birthday to you, too. You'll always be our little baby!
Today is March 28th and I wanted to add some thoughts I had. In 1998, my mother, Rosa Lee Kight Chessher passed away after surgery. Today my mother would 've had her 70th birthday. I 've been thinking about how much I miss her, and all the things she missed out of in the last ten years. Our first 2 grandkids (her first 2 great-grandchildren) were less than a year old when she died. She loved little children so much, especially babies. If she were alive today, she would be enjoying life with her other grandchildren and playing with all the other great-grandchildren she has now.
I wish she was still here with us. She has missed out on visiting us each year in Utah, when we fly my Dad out to Salt Lake to go fishing with Bob. My Dad really misses her, and would have enjoyed having her here. We are comforted by the fact that she is looking out for us, and we know she is free from the physical pain she endured here on earth. We know that she is with our Heavenly Father and we look forward to seeing her again.

FINALLY IT'S SPRING!

I'm so glad that warm weather is on it's way. I hope everyone had a nice Easter and spring break. Robert was in San Antonio, TX in February for 2 weeks, and now he is in San Mateo, CA for several weeks. I am going out to visit him from April 7-11. Then, Monica and her girls are coming out for the week-end. I'll drive back with them on Sunday to Reno and stay until April 17th. Then, it's back to work at JetBlue. I'm looking forward to the trip.
Meanwhile, our family has great news about Angela and Richard. They are getting married in the Salt Lake Temple this Saturday, March 29th. They are having Ian sealed to them. (Anakhan & Azure will be sealed to them later.) We are so happy for their family and so proud of them!
Today, I wanted to add the latest school pictures of our grandkids.

February 2008

Today, I decided to start again on our "barrettfamilybuzz." Bob has been working on his (Barrett-Johnson) genealogy, and I am now working on my (Chessher-Kight) genealogy, so I decided that our living family needs to be documented also. So, as often as we can, we will update this site. A lot has a happened in the last few months, and I'm sure this year will hold a lot of great surprises for our family. Bob and I both will be adding to the site, so we may have lots of pictures and stories that may only interest us, but hopefully, those who view it will enjoy some of it.
